Steam Big Picture + Controler -> Both sessions

Post by tomy137 » Fri May 03, 2024 12:21 pm

Hello there!

After gaining extensive experience with Aster and managing multiple complex configurations, I've encountered a new issue that I'm unable to resolve.

Configuration:
  • A computer with two sessions/screens, with Aster installed and configured.
  • One Xbox controller associated exclusively with one session.

Steps to Reproduce:
  • Run a game on the first session/screen using Steam with the controller; everything runs fine. (1.2 - "Salon" in screenshot)
  • Simultaneously, launch Steam Big Picture on the second session: the cursor moves without any keyboard/mouse action. In fact, Steam Big Picture is being controlled by the controller from the first session! It seems the controller is sending actions to both sessions. If a game is launched through Big Picture, the controller from the first session also controls the game on the second session. (1.1 - "Bureau" in screenshot)
It seems that the problem is linked to conflicts between Steam's controller management and Aster.

Without Big Picture, everything runs fine. Has anyone else faced this situation before?

Thanks in advance for your time ! :D

Since this is a specific use case, checking forums related to Aster or Steam might yield solutions from users who have faced similar challenges.

Big Picture is a Steam mode designed for use with TVs and game controllers. Check your controller support level to find out if there are any issues.

Since the issue arises when launching Big Picture, consider launching it in a way that restricts the controller input to only the intended session. You might also try running Steam as an administrator to see if that changes how input is handled.

I didn't see a resolution to this so I thought I would post my success story for others just in case. I have had to run Sandboxie in the past to run two versions of Steam in two different Work Places. I found I rarely used both instances at the same time so I just no longer run Steam under Sandboxie. This might help with your problem.

In 2021 I had the following issue running Aster V2.28.1:
I have a PDP xBox wired controller assigned to workplace #2 and it works well. However, when running a game (Forza Horixon 4 on xBox Game Pass for example) in Workplace #1 it responds to the xBox controller in workplace #2. I have seen this in several other games between different workplaces. The controller does not show up in the Windows 10 "Game Controllers" panel in workplace #1.
The following Windows registry setting fixed this issue for me (after restarting PC), I don't know if it is still relevant in the current version or if this might be set automatically now...

Code: Select all

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MUTENX_SERVICE]
"killXboxGIP"=dword:00000001
Good luck!
